What it is

Sports massage started at athletic events like marathons, where therapists work on athletes before, during and after competition. In a studio, it’s mostly recovery work for athletes at every level.

Your therapist blends some mix of deep tissue, range-of-motion, compressions and muscle-warming work. Sessions come in the usual 30, 60 and 90 minutes.

Why people book it

  • Can help sore, worked muscles recover
  • Warms up tight spots with compressions
  • Adds stretching and joint movement where you’re stiff
  • Focuses on the muscles your sport or training uses most

What a session looks like

Tell your therapist what you’ve been doing: the race, the lifting block, the sore spot. Then you’ll lie on the table while they work. Expect firm pressure, compressions and some stretching. Whether you wear clothing or not is up to your comfort and your therapist’s approach.

Sports or Deep Tissue?

Training hard or recovering from an event? Book Sports. It’s built around how you move and recover. Working on one stubborn knot or ongoing pain? Deep Tissue is the better fit.

Questions

Before or after an event?

Most studio sessions are recovery focused, so after is the usual fit. Short pre-event warm-ups (about 5 to 15 minutes) are traditionally done on-site at events. Want one before your event? Call us.

How soon after a race should I book?

Post-event massage is about recovery. Tell your therapist what you ran and how you feel, and they’ll adjust the pressure.

Is stretching included?

It can be. Post-event work may include passive and active stretching along with range-of-motion work. Ask your therapist what fits your session.

How often should I book during training?

It depends on your training load. Book visits around your training and events, and ask your therapist what they’d suggest.
